Demystifying Access: a resource pack for the performing arts

After three years of success, we’re pleased to launch a revamped version of our guide for producers and performance makers: Demystifying Access – how to create better access for audiences to the performing arts.

In 2015, Clara Giraud, Project Manager for Unlimited, released a first version of this resource pack, which has since been downloaded hundreds of times worldwide. At the time, in her practice as an independent producer of small scale performance, Clara found herself frustrated by the lack of resources available to make the work she produced accessible to all. This document brings together advice, knowledge and links from a range of people in the sector about creative solutions to providing access for audiences.

This year, we’ve worked with Nicola Miles-Wildin, theatre maker and performer also currently Assistant Director at Royal Exchange, Manchester, to update the pack. We’ve taken onboard comments and feedback received through the years, incorporated new examples and updated references to the ever-changing tools and technologies out there.

“It’s great to see a revamped version of this document that has already been downloaded hundreds of times. There is an appetite for change, a will to do more – but often people are stuck at the
first hurdle, knowing what might or not be possible. We don’t want to write a rule book – far from it – providing access should be about creativity, and (where possible) all access embedded into the artistic nature of the work itself. This is going to mean playing with rules rather than following them. But everyone has to start somewhere – and this is a great place to start!” – Jo Verrent, Senior Producer, Unlimited
