Extant, Upswing and Yellow Earth – Flight Paths

Led by Maria Oshodi (Extant), with Vicki Amedume (Upswing) and Kumiko Mendl (New Earth ,formerly Yellow Earth), Flight Paths‘ starting point was the tradition of Biwa Hoshi players: blind itinerant performers from medieval Japan who earned their living reciting tales to biwa music. This R&D built towards a piece telling the stories of four contemporary visually impaired artists and their migration to the UK in search of better opportunities through a performance combining aerial work, music, song, narrative, live description and audio technology. Extant is Britain’s only professional arts company of visually impaired artists. The company’s mission is to promote the arts and culture of the visually impaired community through the performing arts.

Extant’s work is driven by innovation, fuelled by imaginative partnerships and committed to authenticity regarding visual impairment and access. In this way the company produces high quality, provocative and innovative performance with the express inclusion of visually impaired artists and audiences.

Review

‘It is rare in theatre to be presented with a show that has gentleness, kindness, humour, slow moving art and honesty woven into its subtle tales. This is precisely what Extant and Yellow Earth’s Flight Paths has in spades.’ Philip Lowe, East Midlands Theatre
